We invite you to join us for the 2018 BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA Region V Spring Conference at the University of Montana Western in Dillon, Montana April 7, 2018! Peer educators and advisors from across the region will gather to share, learn, and inspire.
BACCHUS Region V invites you to submit a program proposal to present a 50-minute breakout session at our Spring Conference. Proposals from peer education groups and advisors are given preference. Proposals from other staff, faculty and prevention professionals are also welcome.
Session topics may include advising skills and issues, peer education group issues, student leadership and development, nutrition and fitness, promoting mental health and wellness, sexual health and relationships, alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention, or sexual violence prevention and response.
The Call For Programs Deadline was Tuesday, March 6, 2018.

Registration is based on NASPA institutional or individual membership status. If your peer education group is part of a college or university that is an institutional member, you and your group can register as many advisors/students as you would like at the member rate. If you or your institution are not members, visit the Membership section of the NASPA website to learn about membership types.Register Online

Do you find yourself running late? Making excuses to skip the gym? Stressing about due dates that used to seem so far away? Well the good news is that you are not alone in this struggle, and the even better news is that there is a way to help. The answer lies in changing behavior. This program will educate students and advisors about the process of facilitating sustainable behavior change within themselves and their peers. The presentation will cover broad concepts of lifestyle behavior change, as well as explore specific and meaningful goal setting strategies that students can implement in their own lives. Additionally, the presentation will address the importance of understanding change in a peer education setting, and offer examples as to how behavior change techniques can be utilized on a variety of campuses.
Peer Mentoring is a powerful tool for student success when implemented effectively. The Peer Mentor Program under Weber State University’s Access and Diversity area works with any student who wants extra support during their college experience, and focuses on underrepresented students in their first or second year of college. Peer Mentors use intentional lesson plans to facilitate meaningful conversations on relevant topics for students. In this session, attendees will learn about the skills Peer Mentors must use with their mentees and will get to experience what it’s like to participate in activities Peer Mentors lead during their mentoring sessions, including goal setting and diversity exercises.
This presentation will focus on sharing with the audience the development of "Whose Got Game?", a harm reduction program for alcohol. This program will discuss the role of campus partnerships and student leaders in campus program engagement and other strategies to improve participation on small campuses. MSUB HEROES' four-station program provides students with an interactive and fun way to learn about alcohol use. We will share these methods and our experience which can be applied to other peer education programs on campus where alcohol harm reduction is the goal.
Help students find success by lowering their stress! The primary focus of this presentation will be to share the successes of the implementation of a wellness program onto a college campus and to teach others how to recreate this for their own programs. As we know, stress is intertwined in everything we do, and managing the many responsibilities of a college student is no easy task. By utilizing scientific research studies to support her lecture, the presenter will explore the neurophysiological effects of stress on the typical college student. In addition, she will examine a solution to this problem by explaining the benefits of yoga and meditation, and why she felt the need to introduce it to her campus.
This program is aimed at providing and demonstrating the many mental and physical benefits of exercise. From higher dopamine levels, a healthier heart, to mood improvement, getting your blood pumping is a way for overall life improvement. To demonstrate this, after the presentation workshop participants will have the opportunity to play a game of knocker-ball soccer—a fun and surefire way to up and moving!
Everyone has regrets in life where we failed in some area, but most of us have overcome some substantial obstacles. Quitting tobacco use is an accomplishment that former users should be proud of. People who do develop health problems from tobacco use wish they had never started. I want to share my personal experience with tobacco use and my philosophy on helping people make the commitment to quit their tobacco use.
Peer Mentoring programs have worthy goals, but how do we ensure that we are meeting those goals? If you lead such programs, this is an important question to consider. Aligning what we do in our programs with our stated learning outcomes is an effective way to achieve them. Come learn how the Access and Diversity Peer Mentor Program at Weber State University considered the needs of underrepresented students to inform the creation of the program’s learning outcomes. We will show you how we then used our learning outcomes to guide everything we do - from the structure of the program, to the programming, to the mentoring sessions. We will share how the use of intentionally designed lesson plans guide the mentoring sessions to best address the program’s learning outcomes. We will also share assessment information from program participants in the last two years.
Talking about sex can be awkward! Sex Talks and Blow Pops invites you to participate in an engaging activity to open a discussion about sexual health. Following the activity, we will be talking about sex beyond statistics, and how the University of Montana Western’s PATH Program addressed those big, often embarrassing, questions about sex and sexuality.
NASPA Staff will host an open discussion for peer educators and advisors on mental health and provide an overview of mental health on college campuses. This space allows attendees to identify risk and protective factors of mental health issues, share ideas and seek advice from others, and learn best practices in addressing mental health issues on their campus.
Wayne Mortimer has been working with youth for the past 25 years, he has a background in Experiential Education and Personal Development. He has worked for several youth related non-profit organizations both Nationally and in Australia. After Moving to Montana in 2002 he started a non-profit in the Bozeman/Livingston area working with High school age youth. He is currently staring a new business working with College students as well as High School Students.
