About

The Salzburg Summit will be framed around some of higher education’s greatest challenges. They include, but are not limited to, skepticism about its contributions to society, unequal access to its offerings, increasingly limited resources, a politicized environment, and changing demographics. Yet, for all these challenges, colleges and universities are still seen as invaluable to society’s need for strong democracies and effective economies. They are indispensable institutions—maybe now more than ever—for developing and transmitting knowledge and instilling a deep understanding of the world in which we live.

As part of this highly-interactive two and a half-day program, the Summit will leverage the unique location of the Schloss Leopoldskron which creates a space for visionary thinking and intellectual inspiration. After World War II, the "Marshall Plan for the Mind" was developed here. Since then it has become a premiere historic site in a stunning setting for holding exclusive conferences, presidential summits, workshops, and leadership seminars.

The Salzburg Summit will include an engaged series of conversations facilitated by a group of accomplished scholar/leaders focused on the following statements:

  • Higher education leaders must respond to changing expectations from students, faculty, and policymakers while also leading the discussions about the roles and purposes of universities.
  • Changing technology provides opportunities not only for more efficient learning but also more effective learning.
  • The changing taxonomy of knowledge—the breakdown of the conventional disciplinary boundaries—challenges our standard university structures and curricula.
  • The increasing differentiation of higher education—the division of higher education into sectors—threatens our understanding of common purposes across all sectors.
  • Higher education must respond to the simultaneous crosscurrents of the need for greater access and the reality of greater economic inequality.
