In today's ever-evolving higher ed landscape, vice presidents for student affairs are leading in contexts more challenging than ever before. The Summit – NASPA VPSA Summer Convening will gather 40-50 vice presidents for student affairs (and the equivalent) for two days of learning and networking in a setting carefully designed to facilitate peer-to-peer exploration of the most pressing current and emerging challenges facing student affairs leaders and other campus executives, their institutions, and higher education more broadly. The Summit will also provide the rare opportunity for reflection and rejuvenation in a community of peers.
Participation in this unique offering is limited to the most senior student affairs officer at the institution.
As the vice president for student affairs, every day you face complex and rapidly changing challenges that impact students, staff in your division, the institution, and sometimes society more broadly. This difficult work, while approached as an institutional leader who is part of an executive team or cabinet, can often feel isolating for the singular most senior student affairs officer on campus. The Summit – NASPA VPSA Summer Convening will provide a rare opportunity for a group of peer VPSAs to tackle as a learning community some of the seemingly intractable and enduring problems confronting student affairs and higher education as well as the emerging challenges facing today’s higher education leaders.
What to Expect
NASPA is committed to providing an opportunity for this VPSA learning community to address the most timely and relevant topics, so the final agenda will emerge with input by program registrants as The Summit approaches. We can expect that topics like student activism and campus unrest, changing student needs precipitated by demographic shifts, college access and affordability, student mental health concerns, job readiness and employability, and sexual violence on campus – to name a few – will continue to be top of mind for VPSA attendees and engaged during the program. The schedule presented her is preliminary. NASPA will invite attendees’ input twice during the program development process to help shape the most meaningful agenda for this learning community. Additionally, this professional development program is a gathering exclusively for vice presidents for student affairs. Unlike conferences where participants choose to participate (or not) in concurrent sessions, during The Summit all attendees will participate in the same experience and are expected to engage fully in all aspects of the program including meals. Please plan your travel so that you are able to participate in the entire program. The institute schedule presented here is subject to changes.

The cancellation deadline to receive a refund is May 9, 2019, less a $50.00 administrative fee. This program may be cancelled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. In this case, fees will be refunded; however, NASPA will not be responsible for additional costs, charges, or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines, hotels, and/or travel agencies. Dr. Kevin Kruger draws on more than 35 years of experience in higher education. Since 2012, he has served as president and CEO for NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. Prior to his role as president, Dr. Kruger worked for 18 years as the associate executive director and served as the chief operating officer (COO) and chief financial officer (CFO) for NASPA. He has held a range of student affairs positions at Southern Methodist University and the University of Maryland. As NASPA president, Dr. Kruger represents student affairs at a variety of national forums and is a frequent contributor to higher education news stories on the college student experience. Dr. Kruger has published and presented nationally on trends in higher education, student success, degree-completion strategies for low-income/first generation students, technology, and change management and leadership in higher education. He is the proud father of two children, one a college sophomore and the other a junior in high school. Dr. Kruger received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Maryland.
