Culture of Respect

Culture of Respect builds the capacity of educational institutions to end sexual violence through ongoing, expansive organizational change. 

What Sets Us Apart 

  • Multistakeholder Approach. We believe everyone on campus – students, their families, faculty, administrators, health professionals, and more – has a role to play in creating a Culture of Respect.
  • Innovative Six-Pillar Framework. We compiled the leading practices in the field into a six-pillar strategic roadmap: the CORE Blueprint. Together with the CORE Evaluation self-assessment, this keystone tool anchors our programs.
  • Professional Development. We know campus culture change relies on student affairs professionals with the skills and tools to make it happen, so we support them with trainings, resources, and technical asssitance. 

PROGRAMS and tools

  • Culture of Respect Collective. The Collective is an ambitious two-year program that brings together institutions of higher education who are dedicated to ending campus sexual violence and guides them through a rigorous process of self-assessment and organizational change. Each cohort relies on an expert-developed public health framework, cross-campus collaboration and peer-led learnign to make meaningful programmatic and policy change.   • Foundations. COMING SOON. Foundations is an online course that prepares current and future student affairs professionals with the tools they need to be influential allies in campus sexual violence prevention and response. The si-module course is taught by NASPA staff with expertise in social work, student affairs, public health, peer education, assessent, and violence prevention.

  • CORE Constructs toolkit. is a suite of guides that provide in-depth guidance on how to prevent and respond to sexual violence on campus. The Guides include resources, tools, and templates that can be adpted to meet specific institutional needs and shared withs taff and stakeholders accross your campus. CORE Constructs are now available for purchase in the NASPA bookstore.

FREE RESOURCES

  • The CORE Blueprint a reference guide of evidence-based and expert-recommended practices in campus sexual violence prevention and response. Compiled by experts from our multidisciplinary Advisory Board, the CORE Blueprint is organized around six key areas - the six pillars - that are essential to an effective institutional strategy for ending sexual violence. All Culture of Respect programs and tools are grounded in this six-pillar framework. The latest edition, updated in February of 2017, includes the latest expert recommendations and federal guidance.   • The CORE Evaluation is a comprehensive self-assessment survey that allows institutions of higher education to inventory their efforts to prevent and respond to sexual violence. The questions are organized around the six pillars of the CORE Blueprint, prompting institutional leaders to look at policies, programs, and procedures in each area. The newly updated 4th edition is available in the NASPA bookstore. Contact us if you're interesting in adminsitering the survey via an online survey platform and recieving feedback on your results from Culture of Respect staff.
  • CultureofRespect.org is a unique, centralized resource with content that spans from talking points for parents and families, to breakdowns of complex legal information for student survivors. One higlight is our Prevention Programming Matrix, a one-stop shop for learning about sexual violence programs available to institutions of higher education.

Our history

Culture of Respect™ was founded in 2013 by the parents of college-aged students who were alarmed by the high rate of sexual assault on college campuses and the lack of comprehensive resources for survivors, students, administrators and parents trying to respond to and prevent campus sexual assault. They brought together a team of public health and violence prevention researchers from New York University and Columbia University and experts in the fields of research, prevention education, health support, legal issues, violence prevention, higher education policy, outreach, survivor advocacy, and campus activism to develop the CORE Blueprint, CORE Evaluation, and CultureofRespect.org. Culture of Respect was the first to bring all of these practices together and make them available in one location. Early founding support for Culture of Respect was provided by countless individuals, Williams College, and a grant from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). Additional support came from Founding Supporters Denison University and Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Core Supporters, Kenyon College, Macalester College, Rochester Institute of Technology and Sewanee, The University of the South.

In 2016, Culture of Respect officially became part of NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, allowing Culture of Respect to bring critical programming and a genuine and sustained solution to campus sexual violence to the greatest number of institutions and students. Working with all stakeholders on a comprehensive approach to on-the-ground change, Culture of Respect is leading a cultural shift to eliminate campus sexual violence.
